Benefits of Speaking in Tongues

Lessons from my QuietTime:
Benefits of Speak
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Acts 2:4
What is speaking in tongues?
Speaking in tongues is the New Testament phenomenon where a believer speaks in a language that is unknown to him. It is a gift given by the Holy Spirit to the Christian church and is for the edification of the Body of Christ as well as for glorifying the Lord.
When we pray in tongues, we are yielding to the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Speaking in tongues is proof that we have been baptised or filled with the Holy Spirit. Speaking in tongues is God’s method of announcing the presence of the Holy Spirit in us. Is it possible to be a believer without speaking in tongues? Yes! For instance, Apollos was even a preacher and eloquent in the scriptures but he was not baptized with the evidence of speaking in tongues. We are meant to receive the Holy Spirit when we become believers. “He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.”
Acts 19:2
Many believers have lost the art of speaking in tongues due to carelessness or sin. The Bible says, whether there be tongues they shall cease. Knowing the benefits of speaking in tongues would spur you into seeking restoration of the gift.
Now let’s consider 3 benefits of speaking in tongues:

  1. We are helped in our prayers so that we could pray according to the will of God. Even when we don’t know how or what to pray, we can still pray in tongues. We can trust our spirit to pray for the perfect will of God, regardless of the situation. The Bible says,  “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
    Rom 8:26-27
The truth is that we are confronted with some issues which we may not know how to handle but praying in tongues helps us to tap into the intercessory ministry of the Holy Spirit to pray according to God’s will.
  2. We are empowered to give thanks well to God. When we pray in tongues, we are praying directly to Him. We can also give thanks in tongues! “For thou verily givest thanks well…”
    1 Corinthians 14:17
I presume Jesus Christ gave thanks well, with the help of the Holy Spirit, and there was food multiplication to feed 5,000 people. He also gave thanks well and Lazarus came out of the grave! God places value on thanksgiving, and it takes the help of the Holy Spirit to give thanks well!
  3. We are being charged like a battery charger to function optimally. Apostle Paul said, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself, but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.”
    1 Corinthians 14:4
The word “edify” means to charge up. As we speak in tongues our spirit man is charged and we take charge of every situation cheaply. Try to pray more often in tongues!
I decree and declare that you will benefit maximally from the ministry of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ mighty name.
    Yours sincerely,
